Structure
- Ceramic Substrate: Mainly cordierite with honeycomb straight-through structure (200/300/400 CPSI common specifications). Features low thermal expansion, high temperature resistance and low exhaust backpressure. Silicon carbide ceramic is adopted for heavy-duty harsh working conditions.
- Catalytic Coating: Alumina layer increases specific surface area to carry Pt/Pd precious metals, where oxidation reactions take place.
- Stainless Steel Shell & Sealing Gaskets: Package the ceramic carrier for installation on exhaust pipes.

Common Failures & Causes
- Precious metal poisoning: High-sulfur poor diesel or engine oil entering exhaust leads to sulfur & phosphorus covering catalyst coating and deactivating DOC.
- Ceramic cracking: Over-temperature during DPF regeneration, violent bumping or sudden temperature change breaks the honeycomb carrier, causing exhaust blockage, power loss and engine derating.
- Carbon clogging: Long-time low-temperature short-distance driving causes soot deposition inside pores, increasing backpressure and fuel consumption.
- Coating peeling: High-speed exhaust erosion and severe vibration cause catalyst shedding and deteriorated catalytic efficiency.
